BDP–1: “Know Your River”
Foundation & Scientific Mapping Phase
Objective:
To understand the real condition of Buddha Darya through systematic field study and documentation.
Key Activities:
- Full-length padyatra across major stretches of the river
- Identification and mapping of 45+ pollution discharge points
- Detection of chemical hotspots and toxic inflows
- Interaction with local communities, farmers, and residents
- Initial photographic and field documentation of pollution
Findings:
- Presence of untreated industrial effluents and sewage
- Stormwater drains misused for chemical discharge
- Visible black water, foul smell, and ecological degradation
Impact
- Created the first ground-level scientific baseline
- Initiated public awareness about the severity of pollution
- Laid the foundation for future advocacy and action
